Guest Author Wednesdays ♥ Garrett Leigh

Hello everyone. Today I’m thrilled to have Romance  Author Garrett Leigh stop by. She’s sharing some about music and her new book, Slide! Don’t forget to leave her a little love below!

Garrett Leigh is a British writer with a special interest in using the arts as catharsis in mental illness. Currently writing for Dreamspinner Press, Loose ID and Extasy Books, she has a passion for darkly troubled heroes, tattoos and tales of true love that triumphs against the odds…not necessarily in that order. Expect angst, passion and red hot attraction that won’t be denied.

The inspiration of…music.

Hmm, what can I say about music that hasn’t already been said? Not much, probably, but with the playlist for Slide finally uploaded to YouTube (see below) I’ll give it a go.

For me, music is a conflicting inspiration. Often, when I’m working, you’ll find me glued to my laptop with my earbuds jammed in my ears, but the genre of music varies depending on what I’m doing. Cover art — anything goes. Editing — something familiar and calming, like my Wild Beasts album. But when it comes to writing, I have to be careful. Music with lyrics is too distracting, especially if I’m writing dialogue. I go back to edit and revise, and find I’ve written in words and phrases that are not only not mine to write, but also completely out of context!

No. When I’m writing, it’s gotta be some kind of classical. A rousing film soundtrack if I’m writing action. A tranquil piano piece if I’m plotting my way through some exposition. Yeah, classical all the way. Unless I’m writing some plotless, scorching sex, in which case some dark, durrty dubstep does the trick.

So, with all that in mind, you might ask why the soundtrack to Slide (Roads #1) is full of songs…songs with lyrics, and my answer to that is simple. These are the songs that made me feel when I was writing this heartbreaking book. The lyrics don’t always match up with the story, but the details don’t matter. Sometimes, just a single line or sentence is enough to inspire you, and that’s what I think is special about music. You don’t need the sweeping prose, or artfully crafted sentences. Just a bassline that shakes your soul, or a melody that rips your heart in two.

Enjoy the playlist. Turn it up loud, and think of Pete and Ash.

Roads #1

Don’t look back. Don’t you ever look back…

Shy tattoo artist Ash has a troubled past. Years of neglect, drug abuse, and life on the streets have taken their toll, and sometimes it seems the deep, unspoken bond with his lover is the only balm for wounds he doesn’t quite understand.

Chicago paramedic Pete is warmth, love, and strength—things Ash never knew he could have, and never even knew he wanted until Pete showed him. But fate is a cruel, cruel mistress, and when nightmares collide with the present, their tentatively built world comes crashing down.

Traumatic events in Pete’s work life distance him from home, and he doesn’t realize until it’s too late that Ash has slipped away. Betrayal, secrets, and lies unfold, and when a devastating coincidence takes hold, Pete must fight with all he has to save the love of his life.

Roads #1.5 – Missing Moments from Slide

It’s been six months since Ash shuffled into Pete’s life and turned his world upside down, and six months since they sat in an all-night diner plotting Ash’s theoretical solution for Pete’s faded, botched tattoo. Pete has just about given up hope of Ash ever fulfilling his promise when one day the end of a long shift finds Ash waiting for him.

Tonight is the night.

Ash is ready, and it seems the time has come for him to leave his mark on Pete in more ways than he ever imagined.
